We are going to talk about contrasts and contradictions today.
So first off, In real life, we have signposts like “stop” or “speed limit”.
In writing, its similar, where the author would want the story to run forward, or to drag it out to make it slow, at a very low “speed limit”. Helps you find conflict, theme, character, climax, setting, inferences. You must remember to stop at at signposts that you see to take note of them and become better close readers.
Contrasts and Contradictions are the ways an author shows the character is changing or developing.
What would you think if Hermoine didn’t have her homework one day?
It would show contrast and contradictions toward what she usually does. It would show a change in Hermoine as well as create a problem in the story.
Anchor question:
Why is the character doing that?
So...
When you’re reading and a character says or does something that’s opposite (contradicts) what he has been saying or doing all along, you should stop and ask yourself “Why is the character doing that?”
Last post is a great example of a signpost, where you analyze, stop and think. Why did the character do this? In the example from the story, Eugene fell in love with a woman he hated- there is something different here. For one thing, he didn't want a family or to fall in love for real. He wanted to live life for his own enjoyment. It was odd. Then Natalia said no, when she loved him and cried over his rejection. I guess she now has a piece of mind as in realizing who is really worth her time. But sadly after this, he husband dies after a dual with Eugene. Romeo and Juliet plot, eh?
That's all <3
