The book would have been cumbersome without it to be honest, because it would come along. It would trip over sticks and stones if you know what I mean.
The character hits a dilemma a couple of times in the text and doesn't seem to know how to get out of it, hitting a deadlock.
The flashback is an example of a memory moment because it occurs in the past as the characters memory. Also it completely changes the coarse of the whole story, because without this, Eragon would have no idea what to do with Sapphira.
